Visitors since our launch on Dec. 24, 2000:

For the returning fan...

C'mon everybody, do the twist...and the pony...and the watusi...and the...

By popular request, we've added a "Dances" page to show you how to do all the cool dances of the 1960s. These are videos that will show you the steps while you enjoy the hip music--though in the case of the "Lawrence Welk Show" video, we can't guarantee that!

There were many crazy, fun, hit dances of the 1960s. To name a few, the: Twist, Peppermint Twist, Slow Twist, Watusi, Fly, Pony, Alligator, Mashed Potato, Monkey, Swim, Jerk, Locomotion, Duck, Freddie, Muscle Bustle, Camel Walk, Hully Gully, and many more. Even "the Madison," popularized in the 1950s, remained a 60s hit, as it was perhaps the original "line dance."

The popular dances of the 1960s were a big departure from the "touch" and close dances of the 1950s. They were usually separate, fast, and acrobatic dances. Some estimates say that more than 500 new dances were launched in the early 1960s.

So, c'mon, let's dance!

You requested it, you got it...

Many fans have emailed us, asking about NBC's "Saturday Night Live" 1960s skit from their 2009 Christmas special. It features Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph in a hilarious (and, as it turns out, well-sung) performance of a girl-groups style Christmas song: Santa's My Boyfriend: Girl-Groups Spoof

In honor of Black History Month:
Girl Groups and 1960's Prejudice

New Feature! Many readers have wondered how the girl groups of the 1960s interfaced with those racially-charged times. Of course, many, if not most, of the girl groups were black. Some of the white groups and singers, like the Shangri-las and Lesley Gore, had their photos plastered everywhere. Fewer of the black groups and singers enjoyed the same privilege. By the time the Supremes hit it big, progress had been made--but even the Supremes had their share of slights.

New Videos

Let's go low-def and see some of our favorite girl-groups stars of the past. We've added new videos to the video page.

Enjoy Darlene Love singing "You'll Never Get to Heaven."

Helen Shapiro is cool through her song, "I Don't Care."

And you can romp with Annette and Frankie as they play some saucy "Beach Blanket Bingo."

Improvements

We've added the left sidebar (like on the homepage) on each page, rather than the links at the top and bottom which didn't lead to all the links we have. There are more improvements, too! We are finally going to all the full text of Alan Betrock's Girl Groups: The Story of a Sound and have frequent updates. Thank you for your patience during this transition.

For the first time visitor...

Back to the old days

Dippity Remember the early 1960s...when Coke was just a soft drink...when the only nudity you saw was a Barbie doll, between outfits...when the biggest worry was who Johnny would invite to the prom?

Girl-groups.com takes you back to those days, to the fab era of early 1960s girl groups. Most people can remember the Supremes, the Ronettes, and the Shangri-las. But there were actually hundreds of artists, both groups and solo singers, who were part of the girl-group era from 1960-1966.

Early Lesley Gore Who were these singers? Who made the sound? Why was it so famous, and suddenly gone? Here you'll find an interesting history of the girl groups.

Do you remember a kooky song title? Check out our songs list.

Tang! Wanna know cool trivia or when your favorite song hit number one? You'll find it: Fun Page.

Girl Group GemsThe girl-group sound is still popular, especially with the advent of CDs. You can find famous artists and one-hit wonders on girl-group CDs and in books about the era.

What's happening these days with some of these stars? The gals still look great!

Remember those beach-party movies? Not only did Annette Funicello appear, but so did the Supremes, Toys, & Lesley Gore!

New Review Pages!

New reviews have been added and all reviews appear in alphabetical order by artist. Groups and singers include all your favorites and hundreds more you didn't know about!

As requested, we have now categorized the Reviews pages according to groups, soloists, compilations and "other" (in this case, books and CDs).

You Want It, You Got It!

By popular request, we have added a Q & A page. Read new info and see new pix here!
Q and A about the girl groups.

In this installment, we answer your questions about what defines "the girl-group era," who is the most enduring group and songwriter, with details about characters like Phil Spector and groups like Ruby & the Romantics ("Our Day Will Come"), the Ad-Libs ("Boy From New York City"), the Orlons ("Don't Hang Up"), and the Essex ("Easier Said Than Done").

New 'Bev' Page

Bev, the Efficient 1960s Secretary, now has her own page on this site. It includes the latest strip: Bev looks into the future, the first one to be set in an era other than the 1960s. Another is nearly finished and will be posted next week.

You can also get your own 'Bev' coffee mug for yourself, or as a gift: Exclusive to Girl-Groups.com: the Bev mug. Order one, order more! It will help support this site.
