New 'Bev' Page

Bev, the Efficient 1960s Secretary, now has her own page on this site. It includes the latest strip: Bev looks into the future, the first one to be set in an era other than the 1960s. Another is nearly finished and will be posted next week.

You can also get your own 'Bev' coffee mug for yourself, or as a gift: Exclusive to Girl-Groups.com: the Bev mug. Order one, order more! It will help support this site.

Phil Spector's Recent Spectres

Since Phil Spector was found guilty of second-degree murder, the leading music producer of the girl-group era has had a swirl of bad publicity. But fans see no reason to ban his music: Should We Still Listen to Phil Spector Music?

Here's a poll from the UK's Guardian: Poll on Phil Spector

Spector, 69, was declared guilty of second-degree murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson in a decision reached by a Los Angeles jury on April 13.

Spector could face 15 years to life in prison for the murder charge. He was also found guilty of using a firearm to commit a crime, which carries a penalty of up to three years in jail. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Spector shot Clarkson, while his attorney alleged that the actress took her own life. Her death occurred February 3, 2003 at Spector's Los Angeles mansion. They had met at the House of Blues in Hollywood hours before. Here are more details: Phil Spector found guilty.

Here's "Comment of the Week" from Rolling Stone magazine, with the scariest picture of Phil you've ever seen!

Meanwhile, Louis Spector, the son of Phil Spector and Ronnie Bennett (lead singer of the Ronettes) is trying to land a deal to publish a gossipy book about growing up in the spectre-y shadow of Phil Spector. Louis and his twin were adopted and presented by Spector as a Christmas gift to Ronnie when the kids were five years old.

Read more about his possible upcoming book deal: My Life Caged Behind Phil Spector's Wall of Sound.

Sad Ronettes Aftermath

We've had a lot of emails about the passing of Estelle Bennett, who passed away in February. A member of the Ronettes, she was the younger sister of Ronettes lead singer Ronnie Spector. Estelle truly did lead a sad life that included struggles with anorexic, schizophrenia, and homelessness. Here is the New York Times story of Ronettes member Estelle Bennett. Farewell, Estelle, we love your contributions to some incredible girl-group tunes!

Martha Reeves Creates "Heatwave" in Detroit

Martha Reeves belted out "The Star-Spangled Banner" to kick off a 10-day concert designed to help the ailing auto industry. Reeves, of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, is not only a famous songstress but also happens to be a Detroit city council member. Here she is singing at the event!

Exclusive Photos of Shirelles Day

In September, legendary girl-group The Shirelles was honored by the city of Passaic, NJ. A section of Paulison Boulevard was renamed "Shirelles Boulevard."

Attending were members of other groups, such as the Toys, Reparate and the Delrons, the Cookies, and more! See our insider photos: Groupville: The Girl Groups Today. Special thanks to Tony Leong for providing the photos!

For the first time visitor...

Back to the old days

The (superior) SupremesRemember the early 1960s...when Coke was just a soft drink...when the only nudity you saw was a Barbie doll, between outfits...when the biggest worry was who Johnny would invite to the prom?

Ellie Greenwich in the studioGirl-groups.com takes you back to those days, to the fab era of early 1960s girl groups. Most people can remember the Supremes, the Ronettes, and the Shangri-Las. But there were actually hundreds of artists, both groups and solo singers, who were part of the girl-group era from 1960-1966.

Early Lesley GoreWho were these singers? Who made the sound? Why was it so famous, and suddenly gone? Here you'll find an interesting history of the girl groups.

Do you remember a kooky song title? Check out our songs list.

Wanna know cool trivia or when your favorite song hit number one? You'll find it: Fun Page.

Girl Group GemsThe girl-group sound is still popular, especially with the advent of CDs. You can find famous artists and one-hit wonders on girl-group CDs and in books about the era.

What's happening these days with some of these stars? The gals still look great!

Remember those beach-party movies? Not only did Annette Funicello appear, but so did the Supremes, Toys, & Lesley Gore!
